Quality Standard 1: Teachers demonstrate mastery of and pedagogical expertise in the content they teach.  The elementary teacher is an expert in literacy and mathematics and is knowledgeable in all other content that he or she teachers (e.g., science, social studies, arts, physical education, or world languages). The secondary teacher has knowledge of literacy and mathematics and is an expert in his or her content.

Standard Reflection

I believe that I am proficient in this standard because I have high levels of knowledge in my content and incorporate literacy and math as much as possible. As the semester went on, I think I grew a ton in this standard, as I was able to come up with new ways of cross-content lessons and I also learned a lot more about my subject itself. This standard is so important for my students, and in all the time I spent teaching them I personally began to see this standard as one of the most important to prioritize. As a result of reflecting on this standard, I have the goal to become an expert in my content by studying for my Masters degree and eventually being able to rate myself as accomplished for this standard.
Element A:  Teachers provide instruction that is aligned with the Colorado Academic Standards, their District’s organized plan of instruction, and the individual needs of their students.

Artifact: Political Parties Lesson Plan

Rational: This lesson plan is my example of element A because it directly connects to Colorado's state Civics standards while also falling into the sequence of the overall unit as provided by the district. My role in creating this lesson plan was researching the Academic Standards along with developing connection and engagement between my students and the content.

Element B: Teachers demonstrate knowledge of the content, central concepts, disciplinary inquiry, appropriate evidence-based instructional practices and specialized characteristics of the disciplines being taught.

Artifact: Civics Unit 1 Vocabulary Graphic Organizer

Rational: This artifact is an example of something that I created to allow students to work more with the vocabulary from our unit. The evidence of students having to write their own definition allows me as a teacher to see if they have demonstrated knowledge of the key concepts from our unit.

Element C: Teachers develop and implement lessons that connect to a variety of content areas/disciplines and emphasize literacy and mathematical practices.

Artifact: Census Data Assignment

Rational: This artifact provides an example of an activity that I designed that had students analyzing hard data, that being census results, to give them an idea about how the census can illustrate migration patterns of United States. This assignment allowed for students to have some interaction with mathematical principles through a social studies lense.
